FDA significantly restricts access to the diabetes drug Avandia
Sept. 23, 2010 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it will significantly restrict the use of the diabetes drug Avandia (rosiglitazone) to patients with Type 2 diabetes who cannot control their diabetes on other medications. These new restrictions are in response to data that suggest an elevated risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, in patients treated with Avandia. More.
If you or a loved one has experienced a heart attack or has died of heart related (cardiovascular) disease after using the diabetes medication Avandia, you may have a lawsuit that should be pursued.
Senate Finance Committee Blasts Avandia Drug
Feb. 20, 2010 The Finance Senate Committee Blasts FDA and Avandia Drug
The Senate Report released on Saturday February 20, 2010 about the drug Avandia puts the blame on the FDA and the drug company Glaxosmithkline for not disclosing the dangers of serious heart attacks in diabetic patients who took their drug “Avandia” for blood sugar problems. More
Avandia (rosiglitazone), offered by GlaxoSmithKline, is now under further review with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Black box warning:
On November 14, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that rosiglitazone would have new information added to its existing “black box” warning. A black box warning is the strongest form of warning about a drug that the FDA requires. The information states that the analysis published in 2002 showed rosiglitazone is associated with an increased risk of “myocardial ischemic events,” such as chest pain and heart attack, but that three other large studies did not confirm or exclude this risk. “In their entirety,” the warning says, “the available data on the risk of myocardial ischemia are inconclusive.”
Severe Avandia side effects include:
• Severe chest pain or angina
• Congestive heart failure
• Myocardial infarction or heart attack
• Stroke
• Allergic reactions that are severe
